Deadline nears for EPA’s rules on lead certification

“The construction industry is trying to persuade the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to postpone enforcement of new rules governing work on older homes containing lead-based paint.
Officials are worried there aren’t enough contractors capable of following the extensive new EPA regulations, which require contractors to be certified in the safe handling of lead paint.
The result, the industry says, will be that some contractors will try to ignore the rules, and homeowners might rush into contracts before the new rules take effect April 22.”
